I read this as a kid in Grade 6 or so, and its impact has stuck with me. The following is a short explanation for anyone who might get triggered by “killing Buddha”:

  • Lord Buddha is compassionate and his teachings are pacifist (peaceful)
  • The policemen, and ministers, who set fire to the Jaffna library, could not do it while following Lord Buddha’s teachings
  • If they followed Lord Buddha’s teachings, they couldn’t have even harmed a fly
  • Therefore, first, they (metaphorically) killed the Lord Buddha in their hearts
  • Then, in their hearts, they (metaphorically) burned his teachings, which advocate pacifism
  • Then only they were able to transform into the animals that could burn a library down
  • “They” here refers only to the policemen & ministers who set the fire, not to average Sri Lankans.
  • Yes, both sides committed crimes, which should be recorded and taught, to make sure they do not happen again.
