I once called India the ‘foodie’s paradise’. Then Kerala is its unrivalled capital. I could try only a fraction of Kerala’s wonderful food culture within three days. It’s another reason I want to visit there again for a longer trip.

Beef is like their staple food. Over 50% of Kerala’s population is Hindu, yet most Hindus eat beef. Parata + Beef curry is the go-to breakfast. It’s so common that they don’t even mention it in many dishes. I was told that the best beef curry is found at a restaurant named “Sri Murugan Cafe”. That’s how audacious they are. Absolutely loved it.

Pot Parata

In a clay pot lined with banana leaf, they keep a parata and cover it with chicken roast. Another parata is placed on top of that and then covered with beef roast. Again, parata, chicken curry, parata, beef curry, and finally a parata on top, covered with banana leaf. Two boiled eggs and onion are kept somewhere in the middle of the 6 parathas. It was as delicious as it sounds, but too much, even for me. Note: they do not even mention on the menu that beef is used in this.

Kulukki Sarbath

A divine drink made by shaking vigorously (hence kulukki) a mix of sarbath (a particular concentrated syrup), lemon juice, basil seeds and ginger.

Satti Soru

In a clay pot, rice (Jaffna kind), fish sambol, egg sambol, oyster curry, fish curry, beef curry, fried chicken leg, and three veg curries.

Fish/prawn/oyster fries, coconut milkshake, and more in the photos…
